every time I try to load a single player game, or create a profile for single
player action, the game crashes.  The output to the console is:

Backtrace:
[ 1] /lib/i686/libpthread.so.0 [0x40d68e55]
Signal:  SIGSEGV [segmentation fault]
Aborting.

Anyone have a clue on how to fix this?

Bug #155 has details on fixing this (short answer: put your machine in /etc/hosts).
