Possibility to assign specified icon to an application window, or even change icon for application that already have one, would be very nice.

Assigning to windows that don't have one should be possible, but ones that have an icon already might update them at any time while running.

Mhm. But wait, in Window Maker there is such a feature, like ignoring application original icon and changing it into another, so maybe it's not a big problem doing it in that way - window manager will ignore icon altered by the application, and stick with one defined by user selected by the window class.

that's not technically possible. the only way would be to use a separate hint, but then the icon would not be the same on the window and in panels/pagers etc.

it's possible if we compare their changes to ours and see if we need to override it again. as long as we don't react to us setting it and reset it infinitely it should be okay. if they happen to change it to the same thing we were, then that is fine anyways.
