From the Debian bug report:
After switching the session to GNOME/openbox from the GDM session menu
and loggin it, the gdm restarts with the following error:

gnome-session when launched from gdm was dying saying
** (gnome-session:xxxxxx): WARNING **: Unknown option --choose-session=openbox-session

It looks like the same bug has been reported in Ubuntu as well and a solution posted there:

I can confirm this option is not available anymore and as the WINDOW_MANAGER variable is set it is also not needed so it can be removed to fix this bug.
