Description Alex 2004-01-14 08:49:50 EST
I've recently upgraded to the latest version of alsa (1.0.1) and to kernel
version 2.6.1 (with a bunch of patches from the 'love' patchset). The sound
seems to be playing slightly faster than it should and is quite distorted,
changing from hardware to software sound makes no difference.

p.s. I thought this might be an openal problem so i got the latest version from
cvs and compiled it, but the alsa backend wont compile so i'm guessing it uses
oss or sdl.

Other Info:-
sound card: SBLive! value
OS: gentoo

I have the same problem using kernel 2.6.3. I don't notice the fastness so much
as the distortion which is very obvious and annoying. I just rebooted to 2.4.24
and everything works fine (with OSS sound). Thankfully, the problem does not
appear in the ut2004 demo. I suppose I can just wait until my copy of ut2004
comes in the mail, but I just got a new video card and was itching to try it out
in some double domination.

FWIW, I also tried it in 2.6.2 and it wasn't as bad, but it was still distorted.
Between 2.6.2 and 2.6.3 they moved to the ALSA 1.0 drivers. I tried recompiling
libSDL 1.2.7 but that didn't fix it either.

After posting about this on the ut2003 list, it was noted that on the 20th, some
changes were made to OpenAL to compile properly with ALSA 1.0. All I did was
copy the openal.so from the ut2004 demo and replaced the one in ut2003 with it.
That took care of the problem too.

Using the demo's openal.so work's fine for me, too.
I have updated libSDL to version 1.2.7 and copied over the demo's openal.so and
now there's no flickering sound anymore :-)

Sometimes it's too simple to believe *gg*
I suggest this problem as fixed.

After playing for a bit more, I still have problems with some sounds
(particularly pain sounds) not being loud enough. But that's bug 1180 and not
this one.
