Description prower 2004-02-13 19:13:03 EST
Just recently tried UT2004 under Slackware 9.1, with the ALSA 1.0.2c drivers.
The sound in the demo, despite being maxed out on all available options, is
barely audible at all. I've fiddled with the volume settings in KDE with no
effect; sound is quite loud in everything that I've tried but the demo, in which
I've had to turn the speakers up on bust to hear anything at all. I wasn't even
aware there was music until I physically turned up the speaker volume quite a bit :>

Yes, I have the same problem with Debian (unstable). So far I have no sound at
all although I installed the SDL aRTs libraries. Dunno what is wrong.

I'm getting this with the 2.6 kernel and using the OSS-style emu10k1 driver
(ie, NOT alsa at all). even if i turn the system volume sky-high, i get very
little audio ingame.

especially the music.

Same here, linux 2.6.1, emu10k1 driver.
Actually some sounds are quite loud here, but my own voices are almost not
audible. music is working but that's the first thing I usually turn off.
Might there be some broken support for 3d-sound causing that? It sounds a bit
like on a 3d-sound system the whole rear sound is gone.

Is this all sound, or just the music?

In my case it's all sound, though the announcer voice seems a bit louder than
others. Without turning my speakers up on bust it's impossible to tell that
there's music :> I don't have a 3D sound system so I wouldn't be able to tell if
that's working properly.
Comment 6 Ryan C. Gordon 2004-02-14 19:41:25 EST
Please note that the game ships with support for Open Sound System and audio via
SDL...if you're using ALSA, the drivers are falling back to the "OSS emulation"
mode.

Aha. Well as far as I know my ALSA configuration is working properly, the OSS
emulation included (I haven't had any similar problems in other applications as
of yet, at least).

With kernel 2.6.2 and OSS emu10k1 module, all sound is very quiet for me (music,
weapons, announcer, didn't try VoIP).

As a temporary fix, I pumped up SoundVolume= under ALAudio.ALAudioSubsystem in
the ini config file. Changing it to 2.000000 produced very good results. You
just have to be sure not to touch the volume sliders in game or this will likely
go back to <=1.

Thanks for the suggestion for the temporary fix, it actually improved the
situation quite a bit!

This could also be a fading problem. I've got the same problem with just the
music, though after a while of playing it usually gets to a reasonable volume.
It's still not quite loud enough though, even with the slider all the way to the
right.
Normal sound effects seem to be fine here.

If this is an openal problem I'd say make this a duplicate of bug 1270 and bump
it's priority a bit. ;)

We improved sound volume quite a bit since the demo. Marking this bug FIXED.

Some observations from the retail version:

Music, voice, vehicle and weapon sounds play fine now. Also winning a round in
Onslaught doesn't blow the speakers anymore when the reactor explodes. :)

Ammo and weapon pickup sounds could still use some finetuning. They are very
silent. But this is only a minor issue now and you can leave the bug resolved/fixed.
