the sounds of firing your gun, picking up guns/items, walking and jumping are
all extremely quiet.  some sounds are much louder (probably the proper volume)
such as the power core exploding and stepping in puddles in the deathmatch map.
 for reference, ut2003 doesn't have this problem. also copying the openal.so
from ut2003 to ut2004 didn't help any.

kernel 2.6.1 w/ alsa sounds drivers on a sb live! soundcard using oss emulation
happens with a openal compiled with alsa as well
dual athlon 1700+
1G ram
geforce 3 ti500 64meg

oh, and the music is quite quiet too, even when turned all the way up

I already reported this for the background music in
https://bugzilla.icculus.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1174

If I remember correctly UT2003 had a similar issue. Sounds of items/weapon
pickups were really quiet. All other sounds seem to be fine for me, announcer,
weapon firing, vehicles, etc. I'm using alsa 0.9.8 (with oss emu) on 2.4.24 with
an SBLive card as well.

Oh btw, the machine gun sound when firing from a tank's turret is "a bit" loud. ;)

It's probably all the same, minor problem with some sound settings/balance in
the game.
